What documents you need to submit in Cracow in order to replace your foreign driving licence with a Polish one

If you plan on settling in Poland and want to drive your car here, you might need to replace your foreign driving licence with a Polish one. Here is a quick guide on how to do it in Cracow.

Collect necessary documents

1. Application

You need to fill in the official form, which is available here. The form is in Polish, so you may need help of a translator or someone who speaks Polish.

2. Certified translation into Polish of your foreign driving licence

(A photocopy of your driving licence must be attached to the translation!)

You don’t need the translation if your driving licence was issued by one of the EU Member States, Switzerland or one of the European Free Trade Area (EFTA) countries – European Economic Area (EEA) parties.

3. Recently taken passport-size photograph (in colour)

4. Fee payment confirmation

The fee of PLN 100 can be transferred in advance to the bank account of the Cracow Municipal Office (account number available online) or made there on the spot in the Municipal Office (at the cashier’s window).

5. Photocopy of your current driving licence

6. Your identity document

Non-Polish citizens will also need the following:

7. Document legalising your stay in Poland (residence card, residence visa, etc.)

8. Document which confirms that you actually live in Cracow  (certificate of registration for permanent/temporary residence, rental agreement, employment contract, Cracow resident’s card [karta mieszkańca], electricity or other utility bills, tax return, etc.)

Is medical examination required in the process?

If you need to replace your expired EU driving licence, you will also need to be assessed by a physician qualified to conduct fitness to drive evaluations. A psychological test is also required for drivers of vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.

Some drivers may be required to take the theoretical part of the driving test

If your current driving licence does not meet the requirements specified in Appendix 6 to the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, you will need to take the theoretical part of the Polish driving test.

Submit your documents in the Municipal Office of Cracow (Urząd Miasta Krakowa)

File your documents with the Municipal Office of Cracow at Powstania Warszawskiego 10. Go to the Administrative Centre on the 1st floor, and choose one of the windows numbered 65 to 69. Remember to bring with you the original documents.
